If you plan on implementing SharePoint 2013 in your organization, then you can expect users to “go to town” with the new social features, especially hashtags. In some cases, that may lead to extensive variations of the same tag, as in the following example:

HashtagVariations

As an administrator, you may want to reduce these variations by deleting extra tags, but how is that accomplished? To delete a hashtag, just do the following in Central Administration:

  1. In the Application Management area, click Manage service applications
  2. Click the Managed Metadata Service application

  3. In the Taxonomy Term Store area to the left, expand System
  4. Expand Hashtags and use the up/down arrows to locate your tag
  5. Expand the context menu for the tag and then click Delete Hashtag
