There have been several posts on this site describing the Live Tile Framework for SharePoint. With its Modern UI style and responsive design, the framework solves two major pain points for SharePoint users: (1) surfacing relevant content logically in a single portal page, and (2) accessing content easily from mobile devices. But what exactly is in this framework? This post helps answer that question by listing its key tile types.
The SimpleLink tile allows users to navigate to any specified URL. Typically, an icon is used to illustrate the context for this tile type.
This tile displays the titles of documents in a library. Clicking a title will start the corresponding document in Office Online.
This tile displays the titles of items in a list. Clicking a title will start the default view form for the item.
The NewListItem tile starts the new item form for a list. With this tile, you can start the default new item form or one that has been customized with InfoPath.
The titles of items in a task list and their corresponding due dates are displayed, with green/red indicators for upcoming/overdue tasks. Clicking a title will start the default view form for the task.
The titles of items in a calendar list and their corresponding start times are displayed. Clicking a title will start the default view form for the meeting.
This tile rotates through items in a promoted links list, showing the corresponding titles and images. When users click the title/image that is displayed, they navigate to the URL that is associated with the promoted link.
The NewsList tile rotates through items in a custom news list, showing the corresponding titles, news blurbs, and images. When users click the title/blurb/image that is displayed, they navigate to the default view form for that news item.
This tile rotates through videos in an asset library, showing the corresponding titles and thumbnails. When users click the title/image that is displayed, they navigate to the details page for that video.
The BingMap tile renders a Bing map based on latitude/longitude coordinates from a custom locations list. When users click the tile, they navigate to the locations list, which displays a larger-scale version of the map.
This tile displays an ATOM-based RSS newsfeed from the Web. Clicking a title will take users directly to the corresponding news item.
YammerHashTag, YammerReplies, and YammerAnnouncements
Through integration with Yammer, these tiles shows the number of conversations for a specified hash tag, the number of topics for the current user, and announcement titles, respectively. Clicking the tiles, or items in the tiles, takes users directly to the selected Yammer view/item.
ProjectOnlineTasks and ProjectOnlineProjects
Through integration with Project Online, these tiles shows tasks assigned to the current user and projects, respectively. Clicking a title in the tiles takes users directly to the selected Project Online item.
