Overall, I am a big fan of Office 365 as Microsoft’s attempt to support SharePoint in the cloud. This allows organizations to quickly reduce IT costs without the hassle of an on-premise infrastructure. However, I am hopeful that the next iteration of the service offers records management capabilities similar to what is available in the on-premise product. We have had several customers asking about records management support in Office 365, with one asking specifically about compliance with 21 CFR Part 11. Without the Records Center site template and support only for in-place records management, SharePoint Online by itself falls short in meeting most compliance litmus tests. As an alternative, organizations might be forced to consider hybrid options, as alluded to in this blog post from Don Lueders.
